In 1999, dismayed at the condition of his copy of Roadrunner by Jonathan Richman and The Modern Lovers, and not wanting to contribute further to the increasing amount of landfill, Pip Fowler worked out a way of turning it into a coaster. He cut off most of the vinyl, leaving the lovely Beserkley label and the run out groove. It was cute but didn’t work very well as a coaster; it was made of paper and had a hole in the middle. And records cost more than coasters. So he worked out how to make replicas that did a much better job.
