Hi, I’m Gill – originally from Stockton-on-Tees but have lived in South Derbyshire for well over 30 years.
I’ve always had a passion for art and studied Art & Design in Middlesbrough and then went on to study Textile Design in Derby. My career path then swerved off into the education sector, where I enjoyed many years as a teacher.
Over this last year, I have finally found my way back to doing what I truly love, but had just never had the time!
I enjoy working with a variety of mixed media, including textiles, bold acrylics, watercolour, pastel, and pencil, each offering its own unique way of expressing ideas and emotion.
My most recent work features a more spontaneous and explorative abstract style, the freedom of which I’m absolutely loving! Using bold acrylics as a starting point, I go on to build up layers of colour to create loose, intuitive landscapes that evolve naturally as I paint. My inspiration stems from my many walks around the Derbyshire countryside and reservoirs, visiting family in the Scottish Borders and the Lake District, and anywhere land meets water!
I get a real buzz in seeing how people respond to my paintings—how they discover something unique, noticing different images and meanings that others might never see – a great talking point. This, for me, is what it’s all about.
I sell both originals and fine art prints, which are produced through Castle Lane Studios, on beautifully crafted Hahnemühle paper, selected for its high quality and ability to bring out the richness of colour and detail.
