Having graduated from Cardiff Metropolitan’s (CSAD) Ceramics Degree in 2017, I found myself lost in part-time jobs, seeking meaning in my art, and feeling I never had enough time to create anything of value. I didn’t have the time to make figures so I turned to tiles, I didn’t have the means to transport the tiles, so I began to struggle again. At this moment, I had a new idea and a desire. I wanted to make figurative sculpture more accessible to everyone and to represent everyone, more so I wanted it to be fun.
‘ Why can’t the classical nude be more fun?’ So I made a mug, it was rounded and spoke to me of the human body. My mug had a foot, a belly, and a lip… vessels in pottery are comparable to the body in so many aspects, why can’t they become the body? and so I looked and her shape, her weight and imagined if this pot were a woman. With this image in mind, I began to sculpt, I wanted this mug to be a classical sculpture and an embodiment of what a natural person could look like. The goal was more for her to be recognisably real.
Soon one became two and I realised where my craft lay. It lay in making affordable nude ceramics, that would reflect something for everyone. Infinite possibilities await…
